Rock Climbing

Rock Climbing Banff/Lake Louise
Rock Climbing Banff/Lake Louise
The climbing season generally starts in late April, as soon as the snow melts, and continues until sometime in the early fall, depending on how early winter comes as always weather in the Rockies is completely unpredictable. Throughout the summer the temperature generally ranges from 15 to 25 degrees, and afternoon showers and thundershowers are very common. Lake Louise, due to the altitude and close proximity of the glaciers, is generally a few degrees colder than elsewhere, and the climbing season generally doesn't start until early June.

Lake Louise boasts some of the best sport climbs in Canada. Exceptional single pitch quartzite sport routes and cracks at the scenic "Back of the Lake" at Lake Louise routes including Wicked Gravity, Air Voyage and Blob Rock. These great routes are combined with the mountain backdrop and the splendid emerald green lake as your backdrop, and in the far distance you can hear the Swiss horn being played at the Chateau. A truly surreal experience.

Not only are there climbs in and around the Lake Louise there are many more wonderful climbs in around the Bow Valley. If you have never tried climbing weekend courses are available. Courses will feature such actives as bouldering, basic belay systems and belay calls, rappelling and 'top roped' climbing.

For those who are more advanced and would like more information on the area check out Sport Climbs in the Canadian Rockies which contains over 1400 climbs in the Lake Louise and Banff areas, the Bow Valley, the Ghost River area and Kananaskis Country. New Routes and climbing areas have been added to this great climbing reference book. Other great references are Bow Valley Rock by Chris Perry and Joe Josephson. This is a great guide for multi-pitch climbs on the Bow Valley just outside the Banff National Park gates.
